Extinction Witness Hummingbird Infinity Symbol
The Autumn Rabbit first produced the Hummingbird Infinity Symbol in 2014 for Extinction Witness based on Autumn Rabbit’s original design. Illustrator Rosemary P. Middlebrook revised the symbol in June 2023. For the revision, Middlebrook referenced John Gould’s painting of Turquoise-throated (Godin’s) Puffleg, Eriocnemis godini.
Godin’s Puffleg was last officially recorded in the 19th century and most recently assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2020. The species is listed Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) because of an unconfirmed record in 1976 and further searches of remnant habitat needed to confirm extinction.
“And the hummingbird said, ‘I am doing the best I can.’ And for me, and I hope for you, that’s all we can do. Whoever we are, wherever we are, there is something in our lives that we can do.”
