Haiku - Fire Relief
SEE THE PAIRED FLICKERS
FEEDING ON COLD GROUND, QUICK FLEE—
FIRE ATE THE HEARTH.
In the early morning of January 23, 2025, all sisters residing in Purple Cloud, narrowly escaped a fire that is believed to have started in the walls of the building. Purple Cloud is “the heart and hearth” of Plum Village in southwest France and was where Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh stayed. With the help of volunteer firefighters, some original calligraphies by Thay along with books and other cherished items were rescued from the flames. The sisters are devoted to rebuilding Purple Cloud as part of an already existing plan to build a structure that can accommodate eighty sisters and aspirants together. Please read more and consider supporting their efforts: Rebuilding after the fire
I learned of the Purple Cloud fire with thanks to a message from Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation on the morning of January 27th just after watching a pair of flickers feed and flee. This haiku combines the energy of the two experiences near and far and close at heart.
