Toughie's Song

Illustration of Toughie (Rabbs’ fringe-limbed tree frog—Ecnomiohyla rabborum) based on Joel Sartore’s 2013 photo of Toughie for The PhotoArk, National Geographic Society.

Toughie’s song recorded by Amphibian Foundation co-founder Mark Mandica on December 15, 2014 in the frogPOD at Atlanta Botanical Garden (ABG). Toughie was the last known living Rabbs’ fringe-limbed treefrog (Ecnomiohyla rabborum).

This vocalization is the first that Toughie had been heard since shortly after he was collected as an adult during an amphibian rescue mission co-coordinated by ABG, Zoo Atlanta, and EVACC Foundation in 2005. EVACC has since established a biosecure facility in Panama and all of the other amphibians in the Panamanian collection have been returned to Panama in EVACC’s care.
